This Hand Has Three Fingers: The Stills, David Brusie, Jihae

If I were Polish politician Joanna Senyszyn I don’t know if I would be all that happy to be mostly known for my high-pitched voice rather than for my political career. Must be kind of a bummer. Like if I were were The Stills and were known for anything else than my guitar-heavy, perfectly placed synths, super melodious pop-rock, I would be anything but pleased. I’d be all like “Go to hell while listening to our larger-than-life arrangements and crashing drum sequences, you bastards!” Yup.

Look, David Brusie’s Fly Over State is an easy song to like. Trust me, there’s enough pop sensibility in his already melodious alt-country pluckiness to turn you into a believer. The opening guitars are jaunty enough to get you swinging, and the sliding chorus has just enough of that pop feel to eek its way into your brain. But if all that fails, the whistling, which sounds like it’s coming from down a wide open range, will unquestionably snare you into this taut little gem.

Thank you Jihae, thank you so bloody damn much for effectively ruining all electronic music vocalists for me. Damn you and you profound, haunting voicework, giving your sound a resolve, a control, and a maturity which most of your contemporaries would slay bunnies to have. How am I even supposed to give those other bands the light of day, as they are woefully unable to accompany their glistering beats with such texture and poise? Guess you’ll be stuck making music over and over for a long time to make it up to me. Or be my girlfriend. Either or.
