School Of Seven Bells

So beautiful... to everyone

coverart-schoolofsevenbells.jpgMy girlfriend always told me that no man should ever sing Joe Cocker’s You Are So Beautiful to his love interest. She figures that the line “You are so beautiful to me” is an admission that the guy thinks his girlfriend isn’t all that pretty, but pretty enough for him, and thereby a tad insulting. Can’t say I disagree with her.

Thus, when discussing music, I’m aware that my personal tastes will naturally guide my preferences, so I will become a bit of a Joe Cocker myself and by saying “To me, this song is great,” so as to emphasize that just because it’s good for me doesn’t mean it’s good for anyone else. But I honestly can’t find fault in School Of Seven Bells’ Connjur, which seems to do everything right. As you know, I’m a sucker for spacey shoegazery tunes, but I’ve also been around the block enough to know not everyone does it well. This song here, though, is something special, it’s noteworthy, it’s, well, beautiful.

The background textures move and shift with hazy serenity, with percolating guitar notes echoing out occasionally from their rhythm-keeping role into a chorus of aerial effervescence. The melody is supple, engaging and unnaturally soothing, led by soft, celestial vocals, with all elements coming together effortlessly, amidst layers of silvery sounds slipping gradually into each other with indistinct precision, a beguiling sequence of dreampop mastery.

Oh, and by the way, sweetie? You are so beautiful. Period.
