This Hand Has Three Fingers: Chandeliers, Marnie Stern, Dreamend
On today’s special edition of This Hand Has Three Fingers, we examine how technology influences music! INNOVATIVE
Chandeliers - Mr. Electric
Obviously, a band like Chandeliers not only has technology to inspire it into developing new sounds, but it downright needs technology to get about its business. The quartet would be pretty hard pressed to punch out their snareful melodies in such full-frontal funkyness if they couldn’t plug in their synths to bubble out their slippy bleeping textures and smooth out their endearing, humming pads, like they do on the excellent Mr. Electric.
Marnie Stern - Transformer
You also have to wonder how video games can affect a musician. After all, if Mario can help inspire an Olympian to a gold medal victory, I wouldn’t see why Marnie Stern couldn’t have been inspired by Tetris to write Transformer. You know, when you get up to those high levels and the bricks begin tumbling at breakneck speed, and you scramble to get them into their places, as layers of little squares blink out of existence with identical hurriedness? The velocity with which Stern taps her guitar coupled with the drum’s rampaging pace, atop her own feverish wails, sure sets up a sensory load which leaves you scrambling wildly to keep up.
Dreamend - Are You Waking
But on, the opposite side of the spectrum, the MareNostrum, being a powerful supercomputer and all, may be used for human genome research, protein research, astrophysical simulations, weather forecasting, geological or geophysical modelling, and the design of new drugs. But one thing it isn’t used for, is dreamy, psychedelic music; we’ll leave that kind of stuff to Dreamend, who are releasing their first new album in three years. From what we can gather on Are You Waking, it seems they haven’t lost their touch for sumptuous post-rock epicness deftly concealed in a fluttering, fragile sheath. In your mainframe, MareNostrum!
