This Hand Has Three Fingers: The Silent Years, Paper Route, Readymade Breakup
On today’s Three Fingers, we celebrate pop. We like pop music. We like it when good pop music is made. So here, today, pop. POP, I TELL YOU.
The Silent Years - Black Hole
Let’s begin with some charming pop, delivered unto us by The Silent Years with their song Black Hole, an absolutely warm piece which plays off the better part of simplicity to create a convivial, intimate rapport between listener and singer Josh Epstein. Delicate acoustic guitars, jovial handclaps, and bopping drums help enrapture us into a cozy space, with both piano and xylophone chiming in brightly for that extra otherworldly effect. But this is all a front, leading up to the song’s big flourish for that larger-than-life finish.
Paper Route - Empty House
Next, let’s treat ourselves to some spaced-out pop, through the nimble concoctions of Paper Route and their song Empty House. It’s a super-melodic moment of soaring guitar-pop, flighty and spacious, executed with a welcomed liveliness which is often lost on similar outfits. All throughout the lithe, guitar-led melody, which is both engaging and pensive, fleeting synths dreamily guide the tune, wafting a path of hazy wonder, only to occasionally take centre stage for a twirling moment of sonic playfulness, giving the song an extra twist to its sweet, absorbing qualities.
Readymade Breakup - One By One
Finally, we shall allow Readymade Breakup to flex their power-pop muscle with One by One. Not only do their guitar hooks resonate with unflappable strength, but singer Paul Rosevear’s voice shifts from soft and inviting to explosively vivid in a half-breath, giving the song as much attractive effusiveness as it does a robust backbone, amidst some choice piano chords to give the melody a twinkling glint.
