The Dark Romantics - Let’s Ride
Infused with the best that Britpop can evoke in us, The Dark Romantics unload a swaggering jab of a song entitled Let’s Ride already beading of sweat from the demands a rock and roll puts on those who wish to call their songs as such. Starting off essentially as drum-and-vocals affair, the tune mutates into a full-blown pop beastie, guitars revving like a screaming hot engine under the pressing piano hits. “Let’s ride into the night” exclaims singer Eric Collins in his powerful and remarkable voice, like a failsafe pick-up line only he can get to work. And I’m sure it does.

Vivian Girls - Where Do You Run To
The North German baroque organ in Örgryte Nya Kyrka, Sweden, is the largest quarter-comma meantone pipe organ in the world. And despite such a lofty credential, it more than likely will never be used in a composition by the Vivian Girls, who prefer to go down the lo-fi route, guitars-a-jangling and tambourines-a-shining, with just enough pop sensibility to keep an airy song like Where Do You Run To hooky and light, while keeping all the focus on their beautiful girl group vocal harmonies. While perhaps the blaring bellow of a pipe organ may add to the Vivian Girls’ noise-loving, discordant side, it may be, you know, a little much.

Konrad
Humans need water, they need food, and they need shelter if they want to survive. In Konrad’s case, he apparently needs some “Girls Gone Wild” to get along, if you believe his quirky, chant-a-long, electronic ditty. Almost minimalistic in his approach, Konrad’s slim, peculiar arrangements are surprisingly endearing, mixing all sorts of jocular synth notes and fluttering bleeps across a beat which sometimes feels like it’s performed off cookware. The curiously gauche feel makes his come-as-you-are vocals the perfect coagulator to deliver this offbeat, repeat-worthy track.
