Twin Identity Syndrome
An old university friend of mine was one half of a pair of identical twins. He used to tell me that he often was bothered by the fact that his twin would always want to do and be interested in the same things as he was. When he developed a taste for Pirate peanut butter cookies, his brother curiously developed a taste for Pirate peanut butter cookies. When he took up guitar, his brother took up guitar. When he became a Montreal Canadians fan, his brother suddenly became a Montreal Canadians fan. You get the idea.
He’d tell me it was hard enough to forge an identity as it is, and his brother mimicking him didn’t simplify the challenge to any degree. So I can’t help but wonder if Sunfold will suffer from a similar bout of “Twin Identity Syndrome” (word to health professionals: I just coined that).
After all, Sunfold is a side project of the Annuals, with the only difference in that it’s led by Annuals guitarist Kenny Florence: all the members of the Annuals are here, playing together like they do in the Annuals, but it’s not the Annuals. And since the whole gang is here, the results are easy to imagine: the music is just as rich and hopeful, prone to explosive flourishes of swelling heart glee, intricately strewn with vast, muscular instrumentation, as demonstrated on the song Sara The American Winter. It’s an exceptionally bright and playful song, generously unfurling keen sunbeams of warm music from its glimmering AM-friendly backbone, its boisterous, brimming chorus, and its jocular doo-wop bridge, all brandished with pride by Florence’s robust vocals.
In essence, the strength of Sara The American Winter shouldn’t bring about dialogue as to whether Sunfold is an “Annuals clone” or not, but rather of what wonderful music this tiny group of North Carolina musicians has yet to give us, regardless of the incarnation they decide to let loose in.
