Boxer The Horse
The sweet, sweet joy of vacation's end
And bam, just like that, I’m back from vacationing.
Did I say “early July?” Yeah, looks like I meant late July. Not that I knew that in advance. Like Beck said on an episode of Futurama: “We got into a serious thing.” We started off with a trip to Ottawa, then one thing led to another, then we ended up stumbling into this other thing, then you sort of lose track of time; it’s only once you get back to your usual thing do you fully realise that July has streaked away. It’s both a wonderful and scary thing.
Returning home after a vacation always makes you appreciate your little world even more, and nothing helps elevate this feeling more than a “Welcome Home” gift. And rather unknowingly on their end, PEI-based Boxer The Horse supplied me with the musical equivalent of such a present with their breakout The Late Show EP. Can’t say listening to this album didn’t get me in the mood to get to writing again.
Animal Farm references aside, the guys from Boxer The Horse work really hard to produce rich music, such as demonstrated with their song Jackson Leftfield It’s a swishing, breezy, infectious prize of a rock song, nothing short of a gift to further augment your summer. The charmingly slippy, uneven vocals are well supported by the convivially energetic jangle of guitars, packed neatly into lithe, punchy arrangements through which glides some playful synth curves. And while the whinny of the harmonica provides a sturdy folk backbone, Jackson Leftfield remains a spry, exuberant, and bona fide good times scrap. What more could a guy want from a gift?
