This Hand Has Three Fingers: Shearwater, Joseph Arthur, The Uglysuit

Three thoughts on three songs

New Features Power, GO!

With all the great music flowing around, I don’t always have the time to do proper write-ups for highly deserving artists, and that pains me. Pains me to the OUTER REACHES OF MY SOUL. So I figure I’d go one step above my Quick Link lists, and provide some short thoughts about some great tunes that I came across during my vast, amorous travels across the Internet badlands.

Shearwater’s incredible album Rook is outstandingly beautiful and crafted with high ; Leviathan Bound is another powerhouse track from that album in which the band’s delicate artistry crosses paths with its underlining seething bitterness. Folky and foggy.

With Vagabond Skies, we’re up to number three in Joseph Arthur’s four-EP lead-up to his upcoming LP. We therefore have the chance to sample a new song, entitled Pretty Good Company, an especially brooding, gritty affair in which you’d swear Arthur was having a heady Tom Waits moment. Full of those sensual, eerily longing synths we’ve come to love from the Ohioan.

Having some sincere and optimistic sounds to brighten oneself up isn’t a bad thing, and The Uglysuit’s Chicago definitely has a hold on that charming, hopeful recipe; piano-driven and smartly crafted in old school structures, the song is delicately executed without scrimping on the muscle, and builds to an uplifting orchestral finish which maintains its modest origins while being grand.
