RATATAT
Give me a head with hair
So this is the initial, quick draft I came up with when I decided to do one of my little write-ups for RATATAT’S Mirando:
“The beat is thick and ample, full of substance and consistency you can grab and get lost in easily, thanks to its dense, sound, yet welcoming presence. Its texture is as rich as it is potent, swirling at times and effacing at others, melding into a stylistic shape from which glimpses nuances of introspectiveness, a subtle tone to its usual vivid exuberance.”
I re-read it a couple of times and it hit me: “My God,” I said. “I’m describing my hair.”
Seriously, it sounds exactly like I was talking about my thick, brown, slightly curly mess of a head, right down to the speckles of grey which endow me my endearing air of pensive sophistication. In that vein, I could even say that RATATAT have the capacity to create such a diverse and and plenteous sound that it makes many other acts seem thin and diluted, like the hairlines of many other guys my age, sneaking away into oblivion.
But I can’t really say anything analogous to pilosity in regards to Mike Stroud’s strung-out electric guitar motions, the defining RATATAT sound, which are just as effectual and melodious as ever, perhaps even a little dark on this track, pulled together by Evan Mast’s deceptively simple arrangements to create a creaking, punchy, subversive song.
After all, referring to my hair as “subversive” would be stretching it a little.
