The Gang

Of rollicks and romps.

coverart-thegang.jpgMusic writers have a lot of words which really seldom escape their little universe. Like “romp,” for instance. Who ever uses the word “romp” in everyday parlance?

No, I’m serious, I want to know. When was the last time you hooked up with a friend, and said “Boy, that party the other night, what a romp!” in all seriousness, without trying to be ironic? “Romp” is also often used in conjunction with “rollicking,” another word people never use, yet it’s an adjective-noun combination which is fairly commonplace in song descriptions.

Say those two words out loud right now: “rollicking romp.” Hear that? Do you hear how that sounds as those two words come out of your mouth? Can you seriously envision yourself approaching a potential date and telling said person “I have an extra ticket for the concert tomorrow, you should come! It’ll be a rollicking romp!” and expect to get laid after that? Can you even expect your date to know what it means?

Yet you tell me what would be better than “rollicking romp” to describe The Gang’s Sea So, this infectiously grinding, noisy, lo-fi explosion of a song. It’s an all-out sensory attack, led by boisterous, motoring drums which give the song its unwearying strength, rampaging with little regard for limb dislocation, establishing the very solid foundations of this lofty, anthemic, in-your face charger. The ingeniously melodic guitars lash into a captivating, catchy crunch which tremor with pure sonic power, blisteringly elevated by a screeching cheer section.

So, you see, it’s a “rollicking romp.” I guess it’s better than calling it a “frolicsome frisk.”
