My Education
Wacky misunderstandings brought on by names
Some band names are prone to creating confusing situations.
For instance, consider Texas outfit My Education. If I’m hanging around with a few pals and I tell them “Hey, you guys want to listen to My Education?” I would probably be greeted with strange glances, and one of my most outspoken friends would say something to the effect that I would bore him to tears talking about my academic achievements.
But that wouldn’t last long, as they’d soon understand when I hit the play button to give a listen to these Austinites, closing in on almost a decade of musical existence, poised to release a new LP in June, of which this highly evocative instrumental song, entitled Arch, can be heard. It begins with a downcast guitar supporting the melodious bittersweet folksy timbre of a single violin, although they are quickly joined in by full band apparatus, supporting the alt-country vibe with almost minimalistic design. But just as you think you’ve figured this one out, the song branches out, taking dramatic bridge-like shifts in intention, vibraphones chiming dreamily, guitars muscling their way in, losing the homely longing along the way. Next thing you know, Arch ascends into a crescendo of effected, sonic guitars and boisterous, charged drums, drowning out the stripped-down languishing intimacy in a swell of pent-up, stormy emotional release, concluding with a broken sequence of feedback squeals. We’re a long way from where we were at first, but it what a wonderful ride it was.
The good thing is that, after listening to a song like this, any further misunderstandings are set aside.
