Mudhoney
Then, there, now
When Mark Arm bellows “The past makes no sense/The future looks tense” in that rasp of a voice which grates its way out of his throat, you’d swear he was flailing excitedly, as if experiencing a moment’s reprise from between two panic attacks; a moment of lucid terror in which he finds time is against him, leaving him to wraul “I’m now!” as if to re-confirm his relevance in space.
Which is odd, because the relevance of the twenty year-old Mudhoney can’t really be put into question. The grandfathers of grunge have purposefully remained on track with eight albums, toying with yet remaining faithful to their original overdriven rawness.
So to mark their twentieth year of existence, Mudhoney has put together a new album entitled The Lucky Ones (recorded in three days, if the legend is true), upon which can be found the song I’m Now (referred to in the intro of this write-up). It’s as wired and ear ringing an experience as any Mudhoney experience has ever been, acting as a willing sacrifice to the god of riffs; mighty, intricate, and savoury as they may be, and still leaving enough room for some of those signature fuzzed-out guitars rumbling just under the surface, with a dash of southern rock flavouring for extra zing. Not to mention a few handclaps are thrown in, which feel delightfully awkward, almost as if they were there to try and cheer things up.
I don’t think the guys really have to worry about time at all. It continues to be very good to them.
