You know that one ride at the county fair, the one that’s a circular spinning apparatus in which you are strapped to in an upright position, and the thrill comes from the g-forces pushing against your body as the ride spins faster and faster? And no matter how intense it gets you can’t willfully get off until the ride is done, caught in its grip of thundering exhilaration? That’s how the Constantines’ Hard Times is like.

It’s a muscular powerhouse of a song, no doubt intended to be a house-thrasher for their live performances, strewn together with some metal-like chords which are played with unflappable determination, vehement and relentless, just like the spinning ride. And just as that same spinning ride’s mission is to hold you in place until its two minute cycle is done, Hard Times’ mission is to immoderately stomp around with great heavy boots of roguish bluesey aplomb, splintering away at your moderation with forceful, rich, textured rock.

But, unlike getting on the spinning ride, you can safely eat prior to listening to the song without fear of losing your lunch.
