As far as appropriate band names go, giving a simple listen to the Old Believers makes you understand theirs is more than a name, it’s a philosophy. Everything from their excellent Granny’s Song harkens to an honest love of venerable approaches to music, referencing to classic folk arrangements swarthed in aching, country-tinged balladeering.

I’m not talking about a throwback, however. The effected anvil cracking in the first few seconds of the song and the big pounding bass drum qualify it as a contemporary piece. But the use of strings and banjos definitely expose the americana backbone its lies upon, doubly strengthened by Nelson Kempf’s authentic, humble vocal delivery.
