From Bubblegum To Sky
Sweet chocolate treats
I’ve been saving the last piece of my Rolo for Mario Hernandez, aka From Bubblegum To Sky, ever since I heard Nothing Sadder Than Lonely Queen back in 2004. For someone to compose beautiful, catchy pop tunes with such tortured lyrics, I figured the gesture of offering him the last knobby piece of my caramel-filled chocolate treat would make him feel a little better.
Now that Hernandez is about to drop a new full-length on us, I figured I’d dust off the old Rolo piece and keep it handy as I listened to Even The Sunbeams, the first glimpse we have from FBTS’s upcoming A Soft Kill. It’s another short, charming, 60’s-licked, “Beatles-esque” seducer, wispy and jangling, performed and arranged by Hernandez from top to bottom, demonstrating once again the uncanny talent he has to create these outstandingly light, wonderful pieces of shimmering pop. And the lyrics, at first glance, achingly pine to spend endless amounts of time with one’s lover.
“Aw, cute,” you might think at first read, and I admit to readying myself to pop that Rolo piece into my mouth, thinking Hernandez had overcome his inner gloom. But there’s a subtle murkiness that eeks in with the song’s tempo shifts, punctuated by floaty, introspective woodwinds. Something’s amiss. It’s further confirmed by the “I resolve to steal your sunbeam” lyric, as if Hernandez’s desire to be with his love cannot supersede his catching melancholy.
So, I place the last Rolo back on my desk, ready for Mario like a thoughtful pat on the back. Of course, you can argue about the quality of the chocolate since it’s been out of its packaging since 2004, but to you cynical hygiene freaks out there, it’s always the thought that counts. So “nyah” and to you and your salubrious buzzkilling.
