Sinkane

It just always makes sense

coverart-sinkane.jpgOne of the things which indubitably happens when I see a commercial too many times is that I begin to over-analyze it, poking at minute details, searching for anything that I may have missed to try and cope with seeing it again. I’m sure a few of you do it as well.

Case in point, take this commercial which, if you live in Canada, you’ve no doubt seen:

It is the prime example of the more I see of a commercial, the less sense it makes.

So it’s established that this guy has a robot. A walking, talking, fully interactive robot pal, a childhood dream for countless children everywhere. He wants to take that privilege, that contact, that unique opportunity to create a bond with his robotic friend and replace it for a laptop. How does that make sense? How is a laptop going to replace a full-fledged robot? What tasks did the robot perform that a laptop will be able compensate for? I bet he’s going to be disappointed when he realises the laptop won’t be able to mix him a smoothie.

Not to mention that the guy wants to replace the robot because “it’s got a few bugs.” Uh, hello? Ever think about repairs? Maybe reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling its AI? Or is it just simpler to chuck your electronics into the garbage and buy new stuff? Consumerism before conservation, is that it? What kind of footprint is a robot going to leave in a landfill, huh? Ever think of that, buddy? DID YA?

See, it makes no sense when you have too much time to think about it. However, one thing that remains true and clear, no matter how much you ponder over it, is Sinkane’s song Autobahn.

Sinkane is Ahmed Gallab, a Sudanese musician who brings us great joy with his brand of percussion-led electro-fusion music. Drawing steadfast from the roots of jazz music, Autobahn gleams through an array of instrumentation brandished principally by chugging drums, crystal clear cymbal crashes, and tribalistic percussion; a nod, no doubt, to his native Sudan. Floating in the background of this cloud of sound resonates a texturing freeform guitar, obviously relegated to the role of sidekick to the thudding rhythm, and a fleeting flute cooing windy notes, contributing to the song’s airy self. When the final upsurge gusts its way into a climaxing, whooshing swirl, Gallab unleashes his inner drum demon to the delight of our grateful, undulating selves.

It’s a splendid piece of audio which not only retains its relevance listen after listen, but seems to grow on you a little more every time.
