United we're awesome
I realised recently that there is no universally accepted symbol for nerd-dom. You know, like the rainbow flag for the gay community, the coloured rings for the Olympics, or Amy Winehouse for recovering addicts. If such a symbol were to exist, it would have to appeal to gamers, programmers, comic book guys, otaku, fangirls, and con goers alike. Quite a tall order, to bind all these folks under one shining emblem of geekstuff, but I did put thought to it. Lots of thought.
Then, like a d20 hitting the saving throw against poison, it came to me: the universally accepted symbol for nerd-dom would have to be the number 42 in an emblem with crossing lightsabers at the bottom, all set in Domo-Kun’s mouth.
Doesn’t it make perfect sense now that you visualise it? It would be the beacon, the logo, uniting nerds and geeks under one symbol, encompassing all they love, all they aspire to, and all they want, into one big happy family of love.
It’s such a sense of unity which allows MGMT’s Destrokk to fuse into the gorgeous synthpop anthem it is, despite bordering on the schizophrenic, shifting from mood to mood without much forewarning, as if two personalities were at war with each other. It’s one part dissonant, heavy, and jagged, carried by a plodding bassline and gritty guitars, and one part glittering melody of sparkling synth pads and perky, glinting notes. Both eventually join up to carry the song into a fulmination of discordant bliss, criss-crossing its way through an uplifting, hands-in-the-air harmony which gently shines a from a wonderful place.
Now if we could only come up with a way to unite waffle and pancake lovers. Oh, you don’t think there’s a rivalry there? You’ve obviously never worked in a breakfast place…
