My Morning Jacket
Spaceships are awesome
The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about using automobiles versus public transportation. He was of the opinion that the taking the bus was a long and tedious ordeal with which you never precisely reach your destination, nor do you reach it on time. I argued that taking the bus helps reduce traffic congestion and could help reduce our environmental footprint. Plus, maybe the slower pace could help reclaim ourselves from our timecrunched lifestyle.
His rebuttal? “The only way I will ever get on a bus would be if it were a spaceship,” he said.
A spaceship. Somehow taking a spaceship from his suburban home to his downtown workplace made sense to him. If we had spaceships, why wouldn’t we be using them to explore uncharted planets and galaxies? “Because it would make us awesome,” was his answer.
So if it’s earthbound spaceship rides my friend is looking for, he should listen to the closest thing we have today: My Morning Jacket’s new material. If anything, their Evil Urges track is spacey, exploring deeper into the band’s psychedelic tendencies to command a trajectory which is vapory, light, funky even. Jim James vocals reach into upper, Bee Gees-esque atmospheres, surrounded by easygoing and melodic instrumentation full of hooks and catchy sounds. I’d be remiss to not point out the presence of a string ensemble in that amazing mid-third flourish, which hops off to allow a southern-rock-from-the-future session to ride, connecting logically to past works, while setting themselves squarely in this flowing, creative, natural direction they’ve set course on.
It’s this kind of song that helps make us all, quote, awesome, unquote.
