The War On Drugs

Don't be chicken to love this song

coverart-thewarondrugs.jpgHey, how about a farm joke?

Two organically-fed chickens are sitting in a free run henhouse.

The first organically-fed free run chicken says to the second organically-fed free run chicken, “You know what they say?”

“No, what do they say?” answers the second organically-fed free run chicken.

“An egg a day keeps the axe away!”

Ha-Ha!

I figured a little barn humour to set-up a write-up of The War On Drugs’ Taking The Farm would becompletely inappropriate, since the song’s only mention of farmlife is in the title. Its opening movements sound like a great 1980s pop song, with its initial glistening guitar chords, effected pads, and tapping, steady drum, upon which is rapidly laid a layer of folk sensibility, supported by Adam Granduciel’s homely, creaky, decidedly Dylan-inspired vocals and lyrics. Eventually, the piping, treble-loving, sunny atmosphere has its folkishness become a swirling array of fuzzy noise and muffled outbursts, like momentary slips into derision, only to fall squarely back into the crisp, unyielding melody.

Now, if by reading this you figure that the song might not be up your alley, I’d tell you to go ahead and give it a listen nonetheless. You shouldn’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched.
