Wolf Parade
Soundtrack for your menacing moment
Picture yourself at whatever prepubescent age fits you best. Visualise yourself at the fair, standing in front of the haunted house. You know, the one named “Dracula’s House of Doom” in huge letters covered in bright, obnoxious, blinking light bulbs. You stand there mustering up the courage to hop into one of the carts and let yourself be driven around this place which challenges your daring, to submit yourself willfully into a situation where you will be scared; you’ve never been in a haunted house before. But you’re feeling it: the anxiety, the trepidation, the adrenaline… you get into line.
When your turn arrives, the greasy ride operator unceremoniously eggs you to sit in the sticky vinyl cab. The loud slamming of the guardrail across your thighs does nothing to soothe your nerves. Then, suddenly, without forewarning or comforting word, but instead with a loud clank and a spasmodic jerk, your cart begins to rustily creak its way through the double doors and into darkness.
Dread. Dread is what you feel the very instant the darkness envelops you. Immediately, a soundtrack in your mind begins to resonate, led by ominous piano notes. The steady, looming pace creates a feeling of trepidation which is hard to shake, further emphasized by heavy, accusing strings which judgingly throb along the bassline. Then enters dementia-induced reverberating guitars, which convert into heavy-handed chords, seeming out to crush whatever inklings of security may be left.
That, that is what Wolf Parade’s Call It A Ritual feels like.
Oh, but the darkness really doesn’t last long, only a second or two. Then it’s all bad lighting, tacky plastic mannequins behind metal grating, cheap sound effects, enough stroboscopes to make you epileptic, and so much zig-zagging around in the cart you’re shocked you don’t have whiplash. You’re disappointed, both at the ride for its suckage and at yourself for chickening out for so long. But at least it was scary when you could use your imagination.

Interesting interpretation.
I’ll hold back from posting anything like the 50 other million blogs who also posted this mp3.
It’s an alright track but at only 2:45 I need more Wolf Parade!
This better not be a disappointment like the Long Blondes record…I hated the songs that were being hyped and sure enough I hated the album…

I know you like Sunset Rubdown a lot, Allan. In fact, I am most assuredly more of a Rubdown fan than Wolf Parade. I can appreciate how good “Queen Mary” was, but “Spirit Lover” makes it happen much more for me. Unlike many people, I’m not an immediate shoo-in for eating the Wolf Parade cake and calling it gourmet.
(Did that even make sense?)
Considering that, “Call It A Ritual” is a really strong track and makes me rather hopeful for the album. Moreso than just knowing “there’s a new Wolf Parade coming out.” But I hear you. There’s nothing worse than an anticipated album which fails you.
