Au

Or how to not have anything to worry about

coverart-au.jpgI worry. That’s what I do in life. Worry.

I worry about my girlfriend staying healthy. I worry about my son at school. I worry about my newborn baby. I worry about money. I worry about being a good dad. I worry about being a good boyfriend. I worry about paying the bills. I worry about money. I worry about car repairs, performing suitably at work, liking video games too much, having conversations with people I don’t like, and whether I am overall adequate or not.

It bothers me. Some days it paralyses me. Most days I need some respite. I try to get it where and when I can. And today, it’s a song from Portland’s Au, who fall in that psych- or alt-folk universe inhabited by the likes of Animal Collective, who challenged me to a mood change.

Maybe it was the combative title of the song RR vs. D which got me into a fighting spirit. But from the get-go, an enthusiastic jangly piano reverberates, soon accompanied by handclaps and an angelic chorus ululating “Get it, 1, 2, 3″ in unison, as if part of some celestial pep rally. Sure enough, the marching band suddenly breaks out, stomping vivaciously about, glockenspiels a-blazing, brass section a-wailing, in an unexpected flurry of agog festivity. And just like that the handclaps and chorus return, like a glorious, uplifting aftermath, both meditative and cleansing, a complete moment of utter joy which soars throughout all the strata of your pleasure center.

But I guess I can only push “repeat” for so long.
