The Kills

To be cool, if only for a second

coverart-thekills.jpgI don’t know any cool people. I honestly don’t. I know a lot of good people. Lots of fine people, too. Great folks in there as well. Nifty, special, keen, adequate, fearsome, spiffy, bullish, and antagonising are all in there too. Awesome? Yeah, a couple. But cool? Nope. Not a single one.

It’s really that sad, but there is nobody in my entourage who I can openly associate to that intangible magnetic feeling that causes every gesture made and every word spoken to captivate every onlooker and make them wish they were, at the very least, associated with them.

I mention this because it’s the most likely reason why I’m so bound to The Kills as I am. After all, everything they’ve done so far is incredibly cool, they make me want to stand next to them so I can bask in their coolness. And now, they’re trying some new stuff out on their new album, branching out from whatever comfort zones they had created, and they still manage it make it cravingly cool.

Point taken: Cheap And Cheerful is indeed a bit lighter than most of the stuff we’re used to from The Kills, much less garage but still as uniquely punk-fueled. And while that may be cause for concern, the groovy, audacious disco popping bassline keeps us away from any ill thoughts. In fact, it keeps us free from any type of thought at all, except for a nagging insistence to get on a dance floor. The electro vibe is surprising if only because you weren’t expecting it, because we’re still dealing with the same explosive, cheeky, irreverant, brash, and sexy The Kills we’ve grown to flail widely at. And pine to be with.
