Flight Of The Conchords

Doing it for everyone, and I mean everyone

coverart-flightconchords.jpgIt’s great when people say something and mean it.

For instance, if someone says to you “I loved the meal,” but then adds “But I thought the soup was a little cold.” They can’t claim to have “loved the meal” because they didn’t enjoy the soup. Thereby, a more appropriate statement would be “I loved parts of the meal, didn’t care much for the soup.” Am I being too technical? I highly doubt it. You either loved it or you didn’t.

“Oh, man, I really love Heroes but I don’t really care about that storyline with Micha’s cousin.” Again, that person likes parts of the show, not the whole show.

“For the wedding, I’d love to invite my entire family, except the cousins,” is another misuse, and can even be hurtful, as anyone who has ever heard that kind of sentence be spoken can attest to.

So when the Flight Of The Conchords begin their song Ladies Of The World by specifying that they just wanted to “do something special for all the ladies in the world,” they meant it. They took it to heart. They new that if they were doing this “something special” for “all the ladies in the world” they couldn’t half-ass it. Through their breathy, funky, semi-acoustic composition, the New Zealanders ensured that everyone understood that women of all nationalities, of all social classes, regardless of their occupation, looks or intelligence, even hermaphrodites (”With your sexy lady bits/And your sexy man bits too”) were deserving of this “something special” they had devised.

Now that is what I call consideration, that’s living up to your word, that is ensuring that nobody feels slighted and bitter about not being included in your plans, especially when you take into account the fact that you spent most of your childhood summers with that person because your aunt would always be at your place and you’d put up with that person’s annoying habits domineering personality out of respect and that would be reason enough to expect being invited to their stupid wedding but apparently you’re not not “family” enough to be part of the “entire family.”

You get the point.
