Kensington Prairie

Of muses and manservants

coverart-kensingtonprairie.jpgIf I had a choice to make a monetary living out of either being a muse or a manservant, I would most likely go with being a manservant.

Sure, being someone’s muse is touching and wonderful and exhilarating because all you need to do is do what you do and the person you’re the muse for will be able to unlock the innermost reaches of their creativity; all because of you. So it’s fulfilling on one of them… whaddaya call them… “spiritual” levels.

But being a manservant… hoo! Excellent pay, free room and board, and you get to pilfer stuff from your bastard employer when he’s not looking for some extra cash at the pawn shop, actions which are easily justifiable to your conscience as “overdue tips” instead of theft.

But that’s just me. Someone like Rebecca Rowan would probably feel more at home being a muse. After all, now that she’s taking on her very own solo project under the name Kensington Prairie, her sweet nuanced voice can sparkle blithely without hindrances, to guide the inspiration forlorn to find their footing. And it is this voice which guides Crooked Things Straight, a beautiful, gentle pop tune whose airy tenderness teeters on the sorrowful, wondering if it’s possible to find light throughout the heaviness of life’s challenges, yet leaves us with the unconvinced conclusion that it is. Ambiguous, perhaps, but a good muse never answers all the questions outright.

So she can settle into her role as a muse and be, you know, poor. Meanwhile, I’ll be manserving all the way to the bank! Unfulfilled, spiritually empty and existentially despondent, granted, but LOADED. WHOO
