Ham and potatoes beware!
Ham and mashed potatoes is quite likely the most underwhelming of meal combinations. Visually, it lacks colour in a cruel way: ham’s steam-washed pinkish hue does nothing to bounce off the whiteness of potatoes. The softness of mashed potatoes offers no balance to ham’s supple, chewy texture. And taste? There’s nothing to get excited in the inherent blandness of mashed potatoes, while ham tastes… well… tastes like ham. It’s a boring, un-stimulating, and vacuous experience to say the least.
Thusly, I declare ham and mashed potatoes to be the natural nemesis of Ladytron, who endlessly entice and thrill us with their electronic, dance-inducing, new wave ways. Combine all of those, throw in a little air of mystery and you have the recipe for the Liverpudlians’ newest song, Black Cat, which has been released unto us while waiting for their next album in June.
It’s a much darker, heavier track if you account for past Ladytron singles, but as the keys begin glimmering over the crushing drum beat and thumping bassline, we’re suddenly back into familiar territory. Then Mira Aroyo’s vocals slide into existence, giving the track a seductive, bewitching curb of shaded magnetism, attracting us into a spellbinding moment of caliginous captivation.
Let’s see ham and mashed potatoes bewitch us like that.
