My girlfriend is a big fan of Grey’s Anatomy. I sometimes find myself watching her DVDs with her, counting the number of times they use a Rilo Kiley song (note: I’ve lost count). Yet behind its benevolent venetian blind of unchallenging entertainment lies a significant representation of those from the medical profession we hold so dear. A representation which, if you put any stock into it, is rather scary. Simply put, based on what we see on the show, we can deduce that all surgeons are neurotic.

I’m no moron, I know it’s just television and a character’s psychological development is the basis for weekly drama, but take it from this perspective: after watching these people go, as your typical human being who’s bound to get sick one day, it frightens the shit out of me to think that I may be operated on by a doctor who’s having an existential meltdown because he can’t get his roommate to sleep with him. Not cool.

In fact, the only neurosis-touched individuals I can deal with without any real qualms are musicians, because history will show that there’s nothing like a personality disorder to chunk out great tunes. Not that I’m saying that anyone in Midnight Movies is neurotic, but their killer Should Have Known track has everything to keep someone who’s deep in personal anguish well immersed. As if the accusing title wasn’t enough, the initial solitary thumping of drums is anything but reassuring, the oppressing reverb develops a striking voices-in-your-head feeling, the galloping bassline gives off a sense of wearisome urgency, and the guitars are as serrated and stabby as anything Billy Corgan may have composed during one of his mood swings. It’s one part aggressive, one part mocking, leaving you feeling guilty for something; you just don’t know what.

This is the kind of song they need to play when Grey and Shepherd make out, since it’s just going to mess them up even more, anyway.
