She and Him

Some things you don't need to be warned about

coverart-sheandhim.jpgScissors. You know you shouldn’t run with them. Our parents urged us early on to exert better judgment in such a situation. But what about all the other dangerous things you could mindlessly be doing with scissors due to our parents never having the foresight to warn us about? Like throwing scissors. Never throw scissors. Or picking your teeth with scissors. You should never pick your teeth with scissors. Nor should you extend scissors in lieu of your hand for someone to shake when greeting them. It leaves a very bad impression.

One thing you can do, however, is eat sushi using scissors as chopsticks. Dinner party members will marvel at your adroitness and will discuss it amongst their own family, friends, and well-wishers, having produced a positive impact which will stay with them for weeks to come.

Speaking of positive impacts, it would seem that M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel’s She and Him project made a pretty good one at that little SXSW thing down in Texas. We really didn’t need our parents to forewarn us on this one: Ward’s instrumentation, as wide and confident as it is, provides us with some of the most energetic guitar licks possible for human hands to pluck, while Deschanel’s breezy vocals and effortless melody manipulation produce adorable songs which find refuge as much in the shimmering skies of 1960s pop as they do in the breezy plains of country music.

It’s joyful, sparkling, winter-melting pop which your parents will definitely let you run with.
