Sambassadeur

Listen to them as I remove my silly hat

coverart-sambassadeur.jpgI have never been called to jury duty. I hope one day it will happen to me, I must admit. When it does happen, I am going to wear a silly hat on my head for every day I need to show up in the courthouse.

Whether it be a foam cowboy hat, a classic beanie-and-propeller, a beret with a plume, or a knitted skullcap emblazoned with a maple leaf, every day I will be seated in the jury box, listening to testimony, headwear in plain view, innocuous to its boldness.

Oh, think not, gentle reader, that I would perform such a task for simple shock value. For you see, once we retire to deliberate, after pondering heavily over the evidence, and the foreman collects each of our individual “guilty” or “not guilty” decisions, I will stand and, for the first time of the entire trial, remove my silly hat, and intently pronounce my position. Such a solemn display will punctuate the grievous and impassioned decision I will have made, which will no doubt convert some fellow jurors into joining my perspective. I will have won them over with a simple gesture.

Which is kind of what Sambassadeur always seems to end up doing. At first, you begin your listen and smirk in disfavour, saying to yourself “Who are these guys with their Pet Shop Boys intro?” But you soon realise you’ve been duped into listening to Anna Persson’s wispy susurrations glisten over the band’s luxurious, 80s-pop loving melodies, warm and catchy, with a depth which allows yourself to get lost in it, then hit the “Back” button for more.
