Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Oh, God, how I would have hated these guys in high school
As someone who was never popular in high school and still carries the emotional baggage from that era to this day, it’s relatively easy for me to compare bands to types of people encountered in high school.
Take Daft Punk, for example. To me, the two Frenchmen are exactly like that really cool kid in your class who was quite popular, successful in class, a pro at sports, and a hit with the ladies, yet was always nice enough to chat a little with you or say a nice word at your expense from time to time, despite your obvious social inadequacies.
On the other hand, Does It Offend You, Yeah? are pretty much that obnoxious kid who seemed to take boisterous pleasure out of taking cockiness to the level of high art. You know, that swagger he had as he poured a glass of water onto your plate of lunchroom spaghetti. The way everyone was compelled by his ostentatious effrontery when he pointed out, with rhythm and aplomb, at how you shaved your few chin whiskers for picture day. Or how, despite you having run a smooth campaign, rallied everyone behind him to get elected class president simply through sneering, infectious effrontery.
It just makes it really hard to find consolation by reminding yourself that he’s doing this out of poor self-esteem when your pants are curled around your heels. And somehow liking it.
