Colin Meloy

Swooning over mop tops

coverart-colinmeloy.jpgMy girlfriend has uncustomary taste in men. While most women swoon over the Clooneys and Pitts of this world, she finds much greater fascination in men like Thom Yorke, (young) Robert Smith, and Colin Meloy. In fact, Meloy’s addition to her panthenon of hot band frontmen came from seeing The Decemberists live two Novembers ago. It was also the first time we got to see the band on stage, and it was a consecration of just how great a live band they are.

Meloy’s presence is surprisingly effective; as gallant and grand as he can be, he can suddenly become very personal and close, developing an intimacy which is just as enamouring as it is mesmerising. His finesse is rather well demonstrated in this live, solo performance of We Both Go Down Together, one of the Decemberists’ more recognisable songs. While not one of my favourites in particular due to it containing some of Meloy’s most questionable songwriting (”Meet me on my vast veranda/My sweet untouched Miranda”), the pace, tempo, and rhythm of the lyrics make it such a wonderful story to relate and thereby listen to. You can just picture the dreamy eyes and mop top for my girlfriend to get lightheaded at.

And where do I fit in this mix? Well, she now says Meloy looks like me. Not the other way around.
