The Notwist
Finally, like pizza, it arrives
Not too far from where I live, there’s a guy who owns this little eatery where he makes gourmet pizza. He feels that pizza is deserving of care and appreciation on equal level as sushi, and tries, in his tiny corner of oversnowed Canada, to wreck the fast food mold his baked bread food of choice has been poured into.
Along with using only market fresh, quality ingredients, he avoids any kind of gimmickry. In fact, he states that his pizzas will not be delivered in under 30 minutes. Which is fine by me; my persnickety self doesn’t mind waiting if it means not being served something hastily prepared by a teenager more concerned with assembly line time quotas than something good to eat.
I sort of have the same feeling in regards to The Notwist, who are finally putting out a new album this spring. I say “finally” mostly out of expectation than annoyance or malice. It has been, after all, six years since their brilliant Neon Golden enchanted us all, but the wait hasn’t bothered me. In fact, I appreciate an artist who will take his/her/their time to come up with compelling music rather than punch out as many albums as possible just because he/she/they currently “hot” in the media.
So if Good Lies is any indication of what awaits us on The Devil, You + Me, one can draw the conclusion that the Germans are treading on some indie rock sensibilities, setting electronic experimentation aside for a while. But we’ll, apparently, still be treated with some of those expressive, evocative, rising melodies which we’re all craving. Craving like pizza.
