Shearwater

Helping me cope with winter

coverart-shearwater.jpgIt’s another goddamned snowstorm outside today. Another 20+ centimeters of snow are expected to crash down upon us today, as if the 350+ centimeters we already got served during the course of the winter wasn’t enough. I’ve been shoveling so much, even my shovel’s handle has blisters.

I’m not a fan of winter. Apologies to all people who deride pleasure from the whitest of seasons, but I’m the kind of guy who wishes for summer the minute it starts to snow in November. I can’t stand the white stuff, the occupational problems it causes, but, what I hate most about winter, are the discussions everyone has about how they hate winter. Paradoxal, I know. As it stands today, I just can’t wait for summer.

Then again, I have Shearweather’s new Rooks to carry me through the weather today. Not that it’s what you’d consider a song to make you pine for warm sunshine: It’s a chilling powerhouse of song, haunting and gripping. Composed with poise by an extremely talented array of musicians, the song’s atmosphere is wrenching like a bad dream, like a memory hung on to for all the wrong reasons, yet remains imperceptibly welcoming, endurable if only because it never spins out of control, majestic in its dread, gleaming with tragic qualities, its subtle warmth melancholy as it searches for meaning in this context.

Shearwater’s new effort is due in June. Guess that makes two reasons to get this wintershit over with.
