Plants And Animals

Nature' subversive adoption of technology

cover-plantsandanimals.jpgLots of people seem to think it cute, even useful, that plants can Twitter their owners to let them know they’re thirsty. I, on the other hand, find us at the root (HAR!) of a potentially dangerous trend: nature adopting technology.

For you see, the days where plants could be ignored (forgotten?) for long periods of time are relegated to the domain of memories turned into stories for our grandchildren (”We used to stick our fingers in the dirt; and it was up to us, not them!”). Impossible will it be, now, to water the vegetation when it best suits our lifestyle; our Twitter accounts will be bombarded with updates reflecting their needy, green selves. With the amount of plants on Earth, it will only be a matter of time before we become their slaves.

Rest assured this startling embrace of web technology is simply the tip of a towering hyperborean iceberg trend. Indeed, what’s to stop the rest of nature’s denizens to use the Internet for their own needs? Have you ever considered how scary it would be if praying mantises used Match.com to set up most unfortunate dates with the unsuspecting lovesick? What about rhinos trolling message boards, getting off by randomly sending women pictures of their horns? Or lions predatorily using MySpace to groom our children into meeting them so they can be devoured?

I can tell you one thing: the guys of Plants And Animals are likely concerned about this. How could they not be, using their musical aptitudes to create such magnificent throwbacks to 1970s psychedelia-infused classic/prog rock? Such epic songs like Faerie Dance remind us that our connection with nature does not require WiFi hotspots. In fact, it’s still entirely possible to lose ourselves in wondrous, scintillating musicianship from a trio of Canadians, compelling and modernly appropriate if ever a song about communing with nature could ever wish it could be in 2008.

Note that their first LP, Parc Avenue hits stores today from Secret City Records (March 25 in the US), from the same gang who brought us the Polaris Prize winning Patrick Watson.
