Die! Die! Die!
Making music like heavy duty steel wool
I started by writing three words: “abrasive,” “gritty” and “effective.”
I usually start by jotting down the main ideas I want to convey, then build from there.
My girlfriend happens to walk past me and looks at the screen. She reads the words.
“You writing about a scouring pad?” she asked.
“No,” I answered, rolling my eyes. “It’s about a band. They’re called Die! Die! Die!”
“Isn’t that a little too ironic a name for a death metal band?”
She’s a riot.
“They’re a punk outfit from New Zealand,” I tell her. “They do real down-and-dirty, scratchy punk rock, tightly strewn with no notes wasted. Thus, abrasive, gritty and effective.”
“Let me hear them,” is her response. So I pump out Blue Skies.
The song ends and she thinks for a minute.
“How about saying they’re real fucking good?”
I think for a moment, then type: “They’re real fucking good.”
