Loch Lomond
Whiskey or sea inlet?
Children’s literature these days is blatantly missing one of the most essential of all character archetypes: the lovable drunk.
See, when I was boy, I was a fan of the Les aventures de Tintin. Tintin’s best friend and closest associate, Captaine Haddock, who joined him on the vast majority of his adventures, was a sailor who could down alcohol like, well, a sailor. In fact, it was such an integral part of the character’s persona, we as readers were even aware that Haddock’s favourite brand of whiskey was from the Loch Lomond distillery in Scotland.
This is not to say that Loch Lomond the musical band are drunks or perform drinking music. While I am unfamiliar with the band’s drinking habits, their music rather invokes the serene and inspiring landscape of the actual Loch Lomond instead of anything whiskey-related. Theirs is a soft-spoken, skillfully composed and inspired folk sound which is both warm and mysterious, as if shrouded in its own dreamy landscape. And while I loved their song Carl Sagan from a few months ago, I believe Witchy is quite superior.
But coming back to the original subject, the fact that I was exposed to a “lovable drunk” during my formative years has doubtlessly turned me into a more complete, well-rounded person. A drunk? Never. A lush? Perhaps. It’s such a cuter word.
